Sexual Assault
Response Team
In
1991, the Board of Supervisors in Imperial County designated a SART Advisory
Committee to look into the problems of sexual assault victims and make
recommendations as to how sexual victims would be handled in Imperial County.
For years, sexual assault victims were taken to the local emergency room, where
the majority of staff had no special education or training in the gathering of
forensic evidence.
In 1992, Pioneers Memorial
Hospital
was selected by the
Board of Supervisors as the community hospital who would examine sexual assaults
victims. With the encouragement and financial support of the Pioneers Memorial
Hospital Auxiliary, the SART Program was opened on October 12, 1992.
